Change beyond the weight loss jab

If you’re thinking about starting weight loss medication, already using it, or maybe planning for life after it, LiveWell Coach Susan on the importance of building change that will last.

You’ve probably seen the huge wave of interest around the new weight loss jabs, Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and similar medications like Ozempic. They’re being talked about everywhere, and yes, for many people they’ve made an incredible difference.

But as someone who coaches people through real life health changes every day, I’ve also seen something just as important, the medication alone isn’t the whole story.

The right support, the right habits, and the right mindset are what make the difference.

So if you’re thinking about starting Mounjaro, already using it, or maybe planning ahead for life after it, this is for you.

First, a quick reality check about what this medication can do, and more importantly, what it can’t.

As we move further into 2026, I’m hearing less of “How do I get it?” and more questions like:

“How do I keep the weight off?”

“What are the best foods to eat”

“How do I make sure I don’t go backwards?”

And that’s where my experience as a coach comes in.

Mounjaro is a powerful tool — but it’s not a magic cure. Without changing habits, routines, and the way you approach food, the injections are only a temporary boost. You still have to play the major role in your long-term success.

How Mounjaro works

Mounjaro mimics two hormones to help you feel full sooner and for longer.

Many people tell me it feels as if someone has finally turned down the “food noise” — that constant mental chatter urging you to snack even when you aren’t hungry.
For a lot of people, that quieting of the mind is the game changer. And that’s exactly the moment when coaching becomes so valuable — because with the noise gone, you finally have the space to build new habits.

Weight-loss jabs are not a magic bullet — and here’s why

Mounjaro is an amazing scientific breakthrough — but the real “magic” lies in what it allows you to do. It gives you a window of opportunity to reshape?your habits, rethink your relationship with food, and create patterns that will stay with you long after the injections stop.

And you don’t have to do that alone.

This is what I’ve seen this with clients repeatedly. The weight starts to drop, the excitement and confidence increase after years of battling, and then reality kicks in. The medication can’t do?everything. Here’s what I help people navigate:

  1. Muscle loss vs. fat loss

With rapid weight loss, your body will burn muscle?if you don’t protect it.
That’s why we encourage resistance training and high protein meals.  Not for muscle building at this stage – but for maintaining, strength, energy, and long-term success.

  1. The “rebound” effect

If you stop the medication without changing your habits, the appetite comes back. And sometimes fast.
This is exactly why we use this window to build skills around portion control, emotional triggers, and mindful eating.

  1. Nutritional gaps

You’re going to be eating less. This means every bite matters.

Ultra-processed snacks and junk food won’t give your body what it needs. Fatigue, hair thinning, and other side effects often come from simply not getting enough nutrients. You now need to start looking at quality over quantity.

  1. The habits beneath the habits

When the “food noise” lifts, this is when we can really explore what used to drive you to overeat or eat when not even hungry.

• Was it emotions?
• Stress?
• Reward?
• Routine?

This is where personalised support becomes invaluable.

How does this work?

The tailored approach LiveWell Dorset uses to come up with solutions to the things that are stopping us achieving our goals, is based upon work done by University College London developing the COM-B model of behaviour change. In this model, all behaviour is influenced by understanding a person’s capability to change, their opportunity to change and their motivation to change. By understanding which of these is the biggest barrier to change, we can tailor support accordingly. This model of behaviour change is at the centre of the support we offer, online and in person.
